“The new roads being constructed in our borough are providing vital infrastructure to support our communities. We are committed to reducing congestion to help our residents travel around the borough and these new roads help us to do this," says Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport for Conservative led Wokingham Borough Council.
“It’s fantastic for the project, and the collaborative nature of the partners involved, to be recognised, as well as acknowledging the benefits this project is already having for residents.”
The Wokingham Major Highways Project is shortlisted for Partnership Initiative of the Year at the British Construction Industry Awards.
The council is nominated alongside contractor Balfour Beatty and SCAPE civil engineering. All the partners are working together to bring major road improvements to the area.
Some of these projects have been delivered include Observer Way, Barkham Bridge, Lower Earley Way dualling and other projects across the borough.
The project is the cornerstone of improving infrastructure and providing the homes we need across the borough.
Thanks to carefully planned development, more than £1billion is being invested in the area in the form of new roads, schools, housing, open spaces and leisure facilities.
This is funded through developer payments to provide what communities need to support the council’s agreed planned locations for new housing area, including around Wokingham, Arborfield, Shinfield and Winnersh.

Balfour Beatty, as SCAPE’s delivery partner, are proud to have been able to commit ourselves to delivery of so many essential schemes within the Borough.
“Since 2017, all partners have established team behaviours and a common agenda which recognise the primary objective: delivering highway schemes which will benefit the borough for many years to come. Being shortlisted for the BCIA 2021 Awards is a very gratifying accolade to the hard work and adaptability of all involved.”
